Education & Public Engagement (EPE)
The SSPC EPE programme is broad and varied, targeting pupils, teachers, parents, grandparents and the wider public. We place a particular focus on working with female pupils, those from disadvantaged socio-economic background, and those living in geographical areas with little access to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics research & activities. Some highlights from our programme are our Teacher Continuous Professional Development Programme, our Transition Year Work Experience Programme, the SSPC Structured PhD and our Innovation in Medicines Project.
Our journey so far ...
SSPC outreach and engagement activities have further strengthened the Centre’s impact, achieving European funding for four associated projects and direct interaction with an impressive 120,000 members of the public and school audiences.
The programme and impacts
The EPE programme was designed to mirror our research themes and their important applications in society and the rapidly evolving landscape of pharmaceutical manufacturing. The SSPC EPE programme works with pupils, teachers, parents, grandparents, community partners and with groups who are traditionally under-represented in the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines
SSPC researchers participate in a broad range of events and festivals aimed at targeting the public such as the PINT of Science festival, National Science Week Festivals, FameLab and Thesis in 3.
EPE activities initiate a chain of crucial impacts for the wider community such as societal, economic, human capacity, international engagement, policy and public service, and professional services, to name a few. SSPC is dedicated to developing the next generation of scientists and engineers and also enabling those in society to become socio-scientific citizens.
Innovation in Medicines is a module specifically developed for pupils and teachers in the Irish Transition Year programme.
GLOBAL IMPACT
SSPC EPE has become cutting-edge in best practice in teaching, learning & public engagement, yielding significant impacts through global partnerships.
RAW COMMUNICATION & ENGAGEMENT (RACE PROJECT), an EIT RawMaterials funded programme aimed at changing the way scientiests and researcher connect with the public about the broad area of Raw Materials, visit the website here.
ACTION RESEARCH TO INNOVATE SCIENCE TEACHING (ARTIST PROJECT): SSPC work package leader of a global consortium of 10 partners across 7 countries, value €900,000.
TEACHING MYSTERIES WITH INQUIRIES INCORPORATED (TEMI)
A project valued at €3.1M with 13 partners across 11 countries, 500+ teachers in 9 countries.
