In September of 2017, the SSPC Education and Public Engagement (EPE) team spearheaded a new Structured PhD module for the SSPC PhD programme. This module is run through the University of Limerick (UL). The module, entitled, STEM Communication and Engagement gives researchers and those in industry the opportunity to develop their communication, problem solving and team work skillsets, through engaging with corporate and social responsibility activities and initiatives reflective of their work and research, vital for a vital for a modern and adaptable workforce.
The module was developed through a European Union, European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) funded project, entitled RAw Communication & Engagement (RACE), valued at almost €340k which involved key participation from four third level institutions (University of Eastern Finland, Technical University of Madrid, Uppsala University, UL) and two industry partners (Rusal Aughnish Alumina Ltd, Boliden Mines Ltd). The first steps of the work were to develop a flexible and adaptable training module for industry and a more comprehensive offering for PhD researchers.
To date 137 individuals have participated in the course, and developed and delivered 24 events/activities to a public audience of 4350.
